Reading List (07.10)

So. Whatcha been reading lately?

It would be hard for me to confess to you how many books I actually read at one time. It’s frankly embarrassing and I think it reveals that something must be wrong with me. But whatever. I have been reading some interesting things, and I thought I’d share some of them with you.

I recently finished book one of the new Tad Williams Shadowmarch series. It was supposed to be a trilogy, but Tad can’t help himself, and now it’s looking like it’s going to be four or five books by the time he’s finished.

Also just finished Quantum, by Manjit Kumar. It’s about the history of quantum physics/mechanics. It actually makes this stuff somewhat understandable, which is a major achievement, and it also covers some of the personal stuff between the different physicists. It doesn’t get into string theory and such, but I’m guessing that will be the sequel.

I am about a quarter way through an old book by Pastor Bill Hybels called “Redefining Church,” which I have been meaning to read for a long time, and I am about a quarter way into a book recommended to me by my friend Ray, called “Bowling Alone,” written by a sociologist from Harvard University, named Robert D. Putnam, who has been studying what he calls “Social Capital.” It’s about how people have been moving away from meaningful social interaction for the last 30 to 40 years, why it’s happening, and what can be done about it. So far it’s great.

I’m also about halfway through book one of Lloyd Alexander’s "Black Cauldron" series, The Chronicles of Prydain.

There are some others, but that's enough for now, wouldn't you say?

So. You reading anything?

Peace to you.

  2. Seriously. You should read Quantum. It's not as high falutin' as it sounds. It's just a great book dealing with some very interesting people who clearly thought outside the box. Actually, I suppose they thought inside the box, on a quantum level, so to speak. But I bet you might like it. Which is as committal as I'll get about it. I like these books on natural revelation because they force me to think about God and how he does things. Or doesn't. Or might. Or will. Or...

  3. I'm reading "Forgotten God" by Francis Chan for our unity group. I've been slowly working through "A Million Little Pieces" for quite some time now. I have to put it down for a little bit every once in a while, because for some reason it strikes my core and can be difficult to read. I just bought a book called "speak" which I"m excited to start reading. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who is reading more than one book at a time. I thought there was something wrong with me, haha.

  5. I have heard most of what he's done with Switchfoot and I like the Fiction Family CD. I have heard some of the solo stuff as well. It's all very good. It seems like he saves the more complex lyrical things for his solo work.

  6. This is what I have read in the last year:
about 3/4 of "Rant" by Chuck Palahniuk that I borrowed from Adam probably 2 or 3 years ago(Sorry Adam)- and I just finished reading "Batman: Detective #27" a short graphic novel.

No time for reading - at all.

  7. Lets see.

I've got my Stat's book, more interesting than you'd think, but very hard to get through.

The Two Towers and House by Plum Creek (Part of Little House On the Prarie). My wife and I read to eachother, this is her choice, though I'd be lying if I said I didn't like it. The Two Towers is my choice.

Finaly I'm reading Under The Dome, by Stephen King, good book, but it really proves that he know's nothing about people who have faith, or follow anything close to an organized religion. It's too bad really, he's a smart guy, but his mind is completely closed.
